I can’t believe it.
It's already back-to-school season. Time flies, doesn't it?
In my world, this means one thing: donating and cleaning out closets.
I've noticed an influx of donations, including some from myself as I clear out my son's drawers and closet. He's outgrown almost everything! He nearly wears the same shoe size as me now. He requested a new pair of Adidas Sambas, and I cringed, knowing they’d only be one size too small for me.
So, my son's closet is done… but mine? Not so much.
I live in a house over 100 years old, and while it was a blast to renovate, the closet space is limited. I’ve been stuffing everything I own into the closet, and it's time to pull everything out, see what fall trends I already have, what I don’t, and what I want to donate. It's also time to separate the seasons, organize by color and garment type, and get down to business. And well... I don't even want to think about my shoes.
A couple of years ago, I converted one closet by adding two clothing racks, but it's just not enough. I have two NYC-sized closets, and I’m originally from Texas. If that tells you anything, it's that I need a Texas-sized closet again!
But now, it’s time to get organized!
With children's clothes, it's pretty easy to know when it's time for a cleanout—they outgrow the items. I even had a friend (last year) clean out a closet and give me basically a brand new North Face coat for my son, and it's still in the rotation (thank you, Tera)! Granted, it might not be by the end of next year.
So, how do you do a fall closet cleanout?
Here are some tips:
Start with a Plan: Set aside a dedicated time and make sure you have plenty of space to lay everything out.
Empty the Closet: Take everything out so you can see all your items. This will also give you a chance to clean the closet itself.
Sort into Categories: Create piles for keep, donate and sell. Be honest with yourself about what you actually wear and what you don't.

Evaluate Fall Trends: See what trends you already own and what you might want to add to your wardrobe. Check out my new Blog - Top Fall 2024 Fashion Trends: What to Wear This Season to help know what you're looking for or need.
Organize by Season: Separate your clothes by season. Store off-season items in bins or another closet if you have the space. I literally keep wardrobes in my garage for seasons. You do what works, right?
Organize by Color and Type: Arrange your clothes by color and garment type. This makes it easier to find what you need and helps your closet look more organized.
Tackle Your Shoes: Ugh… yes, I need to do this and I will! Keep only what you love and wear regularly or those special occasion shoes you know you will need to pull out. It’ll be tough, but we’ll make it through!
Utilize Space Efficiently: Use all available space efficiently. Consider adding extra racks, shelves, or storage solutions to maximize your closet space. This can make a huge difference.
Donate and Sell: Reach out to use at Style and Give and we will take your donation pile and pay your charity of choice or list your sell items online or take them to a resale shop. If you don’t know where to start when it comes to donating to us, we’ve got all the info you need down below!
Maintain: Regularly go through your closet to keep it organized and clutter-free. This tip I need to follow.
Welp… that’s about it!
Are you excited or what?
These tips have got me ready to dive into my closet for a cleanout and see which pieces I already own.
Happy soon-to-be fall and happy organizing!
